Shipping heavy furniture

When it comes to the packaging and shipping of heavier items like furniture, it can be a complicated process. We’ve all moved that one really heavy couch up the stairs and swore that we should have just hired movers. Now think of how that same couch has to be packaged and protected during delivery. Not to worry, we’ve got you covered with an easy how to, on shipping heavy furniture.

Only use high quality packaging materials

Corrugated boxesYou want to make sure the furniture arrives at its destination untarnished and still in perfect condition. Only the best packaging materials will do to protect the furniture that, let’s face it, probably isn’t cheap. Shipping costs are going to be high for these large pieces of furniture, and you need to make sure the product is protected. Start with a high quality corrugated cardboard box. The box will make sure the load is sturdy enough and will protect the furniture against damage.

Think about using water-activated tapes. The starched based adhesive on this type creates a strong and permanent bond with corrugate fibers when wet. Even better, reinforced water-activated tape is an even better choice. Remember, this furniture is super heavy and you want the strongest tape to keep your box together tightly.

Remove fragile pieces of the furniture like legs and doors

Bubble wrapThis may seem like a no-brainer, but pay attention. If the legs of the furniture can be removed, do so. They run the risk of being damaged if packaged with the weight of the furniture on them. Shelves, glass doors, arms and anything else that can be detached from the furniture should be removed and wrapped in bubble wrap separately. If they can’t be removed, still wrap them in bubble wrap to protect them against the rigors of shipping impact.

Styrofoam is your friend

Don’t forget about the sides of your furniture. Use Styrofoam sheets to protect the sides from impacts. It’ll save the furniture from punctures during transit and will keep the furniture from rubbing into the box.
