Stretch Wrap Glossary

Stretch Wrapping Glossary     Banding Banding is the act of applying multiple wraps of stretch film to a certain area of a load to reinforce and/or unitize a number of layers or products.   BFR - Conveyor Between Frame Rails: The distance between the (2) outside frames on a conveyor section. Sometimes referred to as effective BFR, which would represent the usable width of the conveying surface.   Blown Stretch Film A film extruded by the blown (balloon type inflation) system. Typically blown film is a tougher but noisier film than cast films.   Bottom Wraps The revolutions of film applied by a stretch wrapping system to the lower layers of a pallet or load. Typically more than one revolution is applied to this area to increase the load stability of the unitized load.   Brake Roller A mechanical roller that provides a resistive force that reduces the film feed rate being supplied to the load. The resulting "drag" will create an increase in tension between the l

How to Stretch Wrap Pallets

Stretch wrapping is a packaging technique used throughout the industry to secure items to a pallet for transportation.  This technique is especially useful when there are multiple boxes or products to be transported via a pallet.  Although stretch wrapping a pallet seems quite straightforward; you could say there is a certain art to this.  This article aims to give you some simple tips to make sure you don’t damage transported products due to unsuccessful stretch wrapping.  Understanding Pallet Load Profiles:   Profile A:  The “A” Profile load is normally cubed with no protrusions. This type of load has clean edges and are the easiest to wrap.     Profile B:   This type of pallet may have a few protrusions creating irregular sides. Pallets will need a better performance film that offers more puncture resistance.   Profile C:  “C” Profile pallets are the most hazardous type of load. These pallets are very irregular with many corners and sharp edges that are particula

Packaging Cost Savings: Cutting Packaging Costs by 50% with Poly Strapping

Image
Poly Strapping Case Study A customer that produces commercial roll up doors was using 25' -50' spiral tubes to package commercial overhead doors. Each overhead door is a custom size. So the customer would cut the tubes to length and split the spiral tubes in half in order to wrap them around the rolled door. Then, the package was strapped with 500# polypropylene strap . The polypropylene strap was manually tensioned and sealed. This strap broke quite often. Furthermore, the doors rattled around inside of the split tube and created lots of damage. To make matters worse, the tubes had a cost of $25 to $40 each. After many tests, our engineers suggested scored triwall corrugated sheets to replace the spiral tubes. The triwall was cheaper, easier to handle and took less storage space. We also convinced the customer to switch to using a Signode BXT-19 with 5/8" x .040 PET Strap . The PET was the correct break strength and the BXT was quicker process for banding their pro
